US State Window Tint Laws - Chart

Window tinting your cars windows is a cost effective way to protect yourself and your interior from solar radiation. However, window tinting laws vary from state-to-state. A good understanding of your states tint laws will help avoid fines and keep you legal

The chart below lists the various window tint limits for each state. The numbers represent the Visual Light Transmission (VLT), which we covered in length in a previous post.

Note whether your state has a "net" or "film" value for determining the proper VLT. If you need to check whether your window tint is within your states legal limits, you will need a Window Tint Meter to test its VLT.

Some states offer medical exemptions to window tint laws

Medical exemptions are available in most states for certain conditions where excessive light or UV exposure can be very dangerous. Check with your doctor or local law enforcement agency for more information and to obtain an exemption form.

There are many good reasons to keep it legal:
  • IT'S THE LAW!
  • You and the installer could be subject to substantial fines.
  • You could be subject to legal action (don't underestimate the cost of litigation!).
  • Manufacturers warrantied only cover legal installations
  • It's the right thing to do!
